What is a slip ring transmitter?

Slip ring transmitters, often called rotary joints or transfer systems, are electromechanical products for the transfer of currents, electrical signals or media from a fixed to a continuously rotating part. Slip ring transmitters are used where rotational movements above 360° are required and a drag chain would hinder this. A slip ring transmitter usually consists of a slip ring assembly and a current collector – and in most cases an additional covering. The possibilities of this technology are shown on this Website. Morgan Rekofa GmbH has been designing and manufacturing current transfer systems for more than 90 years. They are distributed globally from its headquarters in Antweiler.
In addition to the many standard systems we have, with our own R&D department and working closely together with our customers, we can also design bespoke systems right from the budding idea.

A wide range of units can be combined with each other and define themselves in:

- main current
- control current
- measuring current
- data signals
- video signals
- and event media

The electrical systems are split into contacting and contactless transfer by optical fibre. In addition, these units can be combined with so-called media rotary joints and entirely encased!

Signal and data transmission

We’re setting signals!

In view of the ever increasing speeds for data transfer in today’s industrial systems, Morgan Rekofa GmbH has specialised in the continuously rotating transfer of data, measuring and video signals. The systems are modified and adapted to the particular environmental conditions of the customer’s installations and optimally protected against dust and moisture.

All leads and cables are laid in accordance with EMC requirements. Special screening is also provided depending on the on-site conditions. Customers can choose between contacting and contactless (optical) systems.

Power transmission

Harnessing your energy for your current requirements

We have been producing industrial carbon brushes for the reliable transfer of current since 1921. In order to have a system for distributing high currents dependably, we use a contacting design consisting of industrial carbon brushes but it may also incorporate contact rivets or even contact wires.

These can easily be combined with media distributors and contact decks for data transmission. We have, for instance, 1,250 amperes in a hybrid rotary distributor with hydraulic fluid, cooling water, power supply and data bus as standard.

Typical, general applications:

  • • Lightning protection on wind power stations
  • • Return path for high welding current
  • • Engine and brake currents
  • High current already transmitted
  • • 400A in encapsulated slip rings for supplying pumps
  • • 1,250A earthing transmission in welding manipulators

Single slip rings, space insulated (SEA)

Space-insulated slip rings for high currents

Even the highest currents found in industry can be transferred with these rugged slip rings. Graphite mixtures matched precisely to the application are the guarantee for the longest possible service life.

Systemdata

  • Max. rotational speed: 200rpm
  • Max. angular velocity: 5m/s
  • Total service life: up to 300 million revolutions

  • Maintenance interval: 20 million revolutions
  • Other: contacts replaceable

Typical applications

  • Construction machinery (dockside cranes)
  • Engine construction (foundry turntables)
  • Packaging industry (automatic roll handling)

Media distributors

Continuously rotating transfer of media

Media distributors are time-tested machine components used to transfer liquid as well as gaseous media from stationary to continuously rotating elements. In addition to standard solutions, Morgan Rekofa has been developing customised media distributors since as long ago as the beginning of the 1990s.

The seals of the media distributors are made of special materials. These are adapted to the medium which is being transferred. Special sealing-free solutions are also available where high rotational speeds would cause extreme wear.

Hybrid rotary distributor

Flexible combination of various standard systems

All the standard systems engineered by Morgan Rekofa GmbH can be combined with each other to form a “hybrid”. We attach great importance to the economical modularity of our products and thus to offering our customers the greatest possible flexibility. And that means not only for the smallest quantities produced but for large-scale production as well.

The example shows a slip ring transmitter for welding manipulators developed in close cooperation with our car end customer (e.g. Interbus or Profinet by optical fibre including the power supply and repeaters passive or active).

1 = Contactless and as a result non-wearing optical fibre
2 = Ergonomical, light but nevertheless sturdy housing
3 = Power and signal transfer
4 = Standard or customised connectors
5 = Air distributor with connecting thread e.g. G1"
6 = Internal repeater on entry and/or exit

As already mentioned on the previous pages, the standard components shown here are just a small selection of our portfolio. Our staff will be happy to help you select a slip ring transmitter matched to your particular needs.

Standards

Simpler slip rings in high quantities

Slip rings with IP protection

With the needs of the global market in mind, we developed a standard system some years ago which due to its design is mainly used in construction machinery. Thanks to prefabricated series-produced parts and the tried-and-tested, modular slip ring systems, delivery times are relatively short.

Slip ring collectors (SRK)

Fast rotation and field-proven

Slip rings or slip ring collectors are used in rotating electric machines. In the 3-phase AC motor segment this includes asynchronous motors and slip-ring rotor motors, which are among the main fields of application. Working, control, signal and measuring currents are thus transmitted from stationary to rotating components. The current is tapped by our brush holders, which are also used, for example, in the SEA and SER systems. Noble metals are used here as well for any data streams.

As different manufacturing methods are employed for the slip ring collectors, we distinguish between the following versions:

 Press-fit slip ring collectors

  1. High resistance to vibration and shock
  2. Temperatures up to 200 degrees Celsius
  3. High resistance to tropical conditions
  4. Circumferential speeds of up to 40m/s
  5. Max. diameter of the slip rings 350mm
  6. Max. total length 420mm

Injection-moulded slip ring collectors

  1. Max. outside diameter 100mm
  2. Plastic with 30% glass fibre reinforcement
  3. Steady-state temperatures of max. 120°C

Shrink-fit slip ring collectors

  1. Dimensions up to 1 metre diameter
  2. Current carrying capacity up to 10,000 amperes
  3. The exposed slip rings are ventilated and cooled during rotation, which offers significant advantages in enclosed motors

Typical applications

  • Cable drums
  • Plastic, textile and printing machines (heated rolls)
  • Electroplating
  • Cable stranding machines
  • Shredders and crushers
  • Fans
  • Splitting machines
  • Mixing machines
  • Pumps

We will be happy to send you our current list of the standard slip ring collectors available.

Customised slip rings

Every support possible in developing your customised solution

In addition to the standard solutions presented here, we also offer our customers our design and development service from the beginning of their project. Our in-house departments for design and R&D and our test lab enable us to devise a solution for (virtually) any requirements our customers may have.

We attach great importance to working closely together with our customers and our technically skilled sales force provide every support in this respect. We will be happy to discuss your new projects with you.

Our customised designs are usually based on our standard systems or we use these systems as the basis for new developments. This very often produces synergies from tried-and-tested systems and current projects. The experience we have gained since 1921 in what is now over 15 fields of application is of course a major factor. We have already provided custom designs for rotary distributors with up to 600 independent contact

decks, combined versions with power and signal current plus data and media distributors, or, for example, 33 contact decks with a design height of less than 40mm.

All the products shown on our Website can be combined with each other and/or further developed.

We will be happy to receive your enquiry, too. Put us to the test!
