Pelonis Power Cords

A power cord, also known as a line cord, or mains cable, is an electrical cable that connects appliances to a main electricity supply such as a wall socket or extension cord. Pelonis carries straight 180, 90, 45 degree, and T-type power cords in 12", 24", 36", 48", or 72" lengths with open wires or standard NEMA wall plugs. Custom lengths available upon request. Intelligent Motion Controls are additional features that can be added to select DC blowers to help improve performance and efficiency.  Various controls include Tachometer, Rotation Detection, PWM speed control, Life Detection, and others.

This guide serves to educate end users on not only the engineering “how” of DC Blower intelligent motion controls, but also the “why,” including operating efficiency suitable for green applications, as well as improved system

Traditional blowers include silicon steel motors with radial air-gaps. Miniaturization is difficult, operation is inefficient, and power loss is greater at higher temperatures.

Proper cooling is a critical element in the optimal operation and longevity of many devices and components. Without appropriate cooling systems, many electronics and other equipment will overheat beyond their operating temperature limits, resulting in damage or failure. Cooling fans provide a critical function, allowing a wide range of devices to perform at their designed levels.

 

Pelonis Cooling Fan Use in Drones

In the past decade, drone technology has made significant advancements, including the adaptation of cooling fans to improve operating temperatures and maintain precise performance specifications. As demand for drones has grown, so has the variety of sizes available, as well as their broad range of applications that reach beyond mere recreation to significant agricultural, commercial, military, and industrial uses. Optimal performance of these machines requires proper cooling provided by specialized fans adapted to meet the unique challenges drones present. 

 

Pelonis Drone Functionality

The capacity to keep a UAV or drone in the air comes from the propeller, which is the heart of the device. Flight is possible using a collection of airfoils—similar to airplane wings—along with the propeller, providing lift for the aircraft.

Key design elements in the propeller's blade include the angle and overall weight. The blade's angle in a rotating propeller pushes air downward while resistance to this forced air pushes the UAV upward. Essentially, the rotating propeller causes the air above it to move at greater velocity than the air below it.

This is in accordance with the Bernoulli Principle, which shows that a pressure drop (which conserves energy) accompanies velocity and the low pressure lifts up the drone. However, lift cannot take place without the proper blade angle, weight, and size.

 

Pelonis Drone Cooling

The rotation of the propeller's blade requires a motor or engine able to provide enough air velocity to produce lift. A lapse in the performance of this motor will limit or fail to provide lift, causing drone failure. The most common cause of this performance lapse is engine overheating.

Such a performance failure in a military-grade drone can produce dangerous results. For example, if a UAV were to overheat and fail in hostile territory, sensitive information may be exposed and an asset costing millions of dollars may be lost.

Consequently, high-performance drone designs often focus on thermal management. This is provided by cooling fans that meet the necessary size, weight, and airflow rate requirements to maintain the craft at ideal operating temperatures. In addition, proper cooling allows for greater longevity of the rotary engines used in UAVs, making cooling fans a critical element in overall cost-effective operation.

Pelonis Cooling Fans for 3D Printing

3D printers also rely heavily on cooling fans to maintain appropriate operating temperatures, which has a significant impact on the service life and cost-effective operation of what is typically an expensive piece of machinery. While 3D printers have been around since the 1980s, they have not been commonly used commercially or industrially until very recently.

Their popularity among manufacturers and hobbyists alike has produced greater demand for these machines, as well as for high-performance components that help improve their operation.

 

Pelonis Elimination of Stringing

Cooling fans have been used to improve bridging and overhang performance in modern 3D printers. Optimal overhang performance is crucial for maintaining the integrity of a PLA (polylactic acid) 3D-printed product.

Thanks to recent innovations, cooling fans in 3D printers now have the capacity to operate at different speeds throughout the printing process. This has been integral to solving key performance problems in 3D printers, such as stringing, wherein small threads of plastic trail from the workpiece in undesirable places:

  • When a fan operates at a constant speed throughout the duration of printing, it produces stringing in the final product.

  • This effect occurs when the machine is unable to control the feeding of the thermoplastic filament through the nozzle, which is often a result of too much air movement from the cooling fan.

  • The capacity to alter fan speeds produces higher consistency with less dependence upon the surrounding temperature of the environment.


Improved Printing Performance

Additional considerations related to PLA cooling fans include:

  • Adhesion. The level of adhesion to the bed surface is critical to the outcome of 3D printing. This adhesion occurs within the first few layers of the printed product. The use of a cooling fan too early may interrupt or limit this adhesive process.

  • Placement. Cooling fan placement and airflow can critically alter the temperature of the nozzle and affect the consistency of the heated PLA material if directed toward the hot end of the machine.

  • Cooling speed. It is critical that fans are not in operation when printing with ABS thermoplastics. ABS is prone to cracking when cooled too rapidly.

Used properly, cooling fans produce optimal results in 3D printing by reducing stringing, promoting proper filament material flow, and creating a cleaner, more appealing final product.

 

Pelonis Overall Considerations of Cooling Fans

The two previous examples demonstrate the importance of proper cooling fan operation within machinery. Designing any system that requires both heating and cooling capabilities can create a number of challenges and potential performance failures. Overcoming design challenges to enhance efficiency and longevity of the system is possible by taking the following considerations into account:

  • The operating environment. This factor analyzes all the diverse conditions the system will operate under. It is critical to take into account normal temperatures as well as extremes that may occur. When designing your cooling system, it’s often best to plan for the worst, so don’t be afraid to over-engineer the cooling system if you aren’t sure of exact operating conditions.   • Size Matters. Provisioning adequate heating and cooling in limited space can be a challenge for many designs. In some cases, the ideal cooling solution will mean using a higher RPM fan or determining the best fan for the application. For heating, you may need to increase the number of heating elements or increase available power for existing elements.

  • Available Power. An increase in heating and cooling comes with an increase in the amount of power required for operation. Greater power requirements affect cable routing, space, power supply capacities, and additional heat that the system design will have to address.

  • Filtration. The air moving through a cooling fan comes from its surrounding environment. An understanding of the various environmental elements such as dust, moisture, dirt, moisture, and any other contaminants and their potential to damage internal system components is necessary. Adequate filtration to prevent the effects of these particulates is critical to any system design.

  • Noise Levels. Noise level during operation is more critical in some applications than others, but an understanding of the various factors that contribute to noise is essential. Among those factors are the size of the fan and its RPM. Noise typically correlates directly with speed—the faster the fan turns, the louder it will be. In some cases, noise reduction results from using a larger fan at lower rpm when space allows.

When increased size is not an option, it might be necessary to consider a different fan type. The two main considerations typically include axial and centrifugal fans, which produce varying degrees of noise. Insulation also influences fan noise, as do mounting materials meant to reduce vibration. Reducing fan noise might require the implementation of several or all of these measures to achieve the desired result

An understanding of these considerations helps facilitate the optimal performance of any heating or cooling system that uses fans to move air through the device.
